Michelin is hiring! We are looking for a top candidate with a passion for physics and engineering to join our Research & Development team.

The opportunity

Michelin is recruiting a Tire Performance Research Engineer to work on developing tools and methods for our tire and material design communities. You will join a team dedicated to the physics that govern the performance of our products.

Your mission will include working with scientists and engineers where you will apply and develop test and simulation methods. Our team supports product designers by providing expertise on specified tire performance domains. Tire Performance Engineers use Data Analysis and Signal Processing skills to interpret test data and synthesize results from testing. That analysis is then used to help product designers solve problems and iterate their designs.

Situated in Greenville, South Carolina, the sprawling Michelin Americas Research Center (MARC) campus is home to approximately 650 talented employees, including materials researchers, product designers, scientists, engineers, test technicians and individuals in a variety of support roles.

Our team contributes to designing, testing, and industrializing the innovative products that earn Michelin’s deserving place as one of the world’s leading tire manufacturers.

Greenville, SC is conveniently located within driving distance to east coast beaches, the Blue Ridge Mountains and large cities like Atlanta and Charlotte. The mild climate, charming downtown, and impressive culinary scene are just a few of the perks of living here.

Overview:

Tire Performance Research Engineers assist product designers by knowing and understanding the physics of tire functions. This knowledge is applied through creation of tools, test methods, and simulations in addition to as-needed support. Our Research Engineers use their curiosity and creativity to help create the next great Michelin products.

What you will do:

Work within the Michelin Research & Development networks to:

Develop and share scientific and technical knowledge for the sake of advancing and improving tire performance.

Provide relevant test methods to the Michelin testing department (GST) that explore a targeted area of tire performance while also including any possible efficiencies. Provide simulation methods to design and development teams (B2C, B2B, AV, BR, etc...) with the goal of accelerating the product development cycle. Assure in the long term that these methods are relevant and robust.

Provide expertise to design and development teams in a known domain of tire performance, enabling success of near to market (2 years to launch), advanced development (5-10 years to launch), and fundamental research (10+ years to launch) level product development projects.

Maintain and improve existing tire performance test methods.

Train others or give expertise outside of the company on a specific domain.

Successful applicants would be trained within Michelin in one of the following tire performance domains:

  • Rolling Resistance
  • Handling
  • Noise & Comfort

Key expected achievements:

  • Build test and simulation methods, define performance criteria in a known domain
  • Adapt and maintain test and simulation methods
  • Solve technical issues by using existing methods
  • Transmit and share knowledge (reports, trainings)

What you will bring:

Technical knowledge:

  • In-depth understanding and proficiency in simulation tools and applications.
  • Knowledge of Design & Development techniques and a willingness to learn and apply more.
  • Proficiency in Python or Matlab or willingness to learn. CAD desirable.
  • Data Analysis of physical measurements
  • Signal Processing
  • The ability to capture needs from partners and propose solutions.

Additional requirements:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering, Physics, Statistics, or Applied Mathematics required along with a proven desire for working in a Research & Development network.
  • Masters or PhD or equivalent experience preferred
  • Previous experience as a researcher in an industrial environment is a plus
